Feeling tight? Stretching might not be the full solution. Many times, muscles feel “tight” because they’re weak and working overtime to stabilize a joint. For example, hamstrings often feel tight when the glutes or core are underactive. Strengthening the weak muscle group often reduces the sensation of tightness more effectively than endless stretching. This doesn’t mean stretching has no place—it’s a useful tool for flexibility and recovery. But if you’re constantly stretching the same spot without lasting relief, it’s worth considering a strengthening program instead. A physical therapist can help identify whether your tightness is due to mobility restrictions or underlying weakness. Strength and stability often bring longer-lasting freedom of movement.
Do you have tight hip flexors that never seem to give up no matter how much you stretch? Or a hamstring that keeps bugging you? You might benefit from some targeted strengthening instead!
